Who was Sir Thomas Browne?
Sir Thomas Browne Day is an annual celebration of the life and work of this 17th century physician and polymath, who lived in Norwich for most of his adult life. He is well-known across the world for his literary works, his thinking, his scientific experiments, the words he invented and much more, but not so many people know about him in Norwich. The free events around his birthday, Thursday 19 October, are a chance to find out more about this interesting and ‘curious’ man, linking with the Norwich Science Festival and involving St Peter Mancroft, Norwich.

The celebrations are intended to tell people more about Thomas Browne's life and works and also to encourage and stimulate a 'Brownean' approach to life, that is, one of curiosity and communication - he really wanted to find out about and understand the world around him. Whatever he found out, he communicated to the people around him in a language they could understand (ie not Latin), even though we find it quite hard reading these days

This site is part of the Thomas Browne Project with the aim to collate information and contributions about Sir Thomas Browne, his work, life and times in Norwich and make them accessible to the public,  edited and published by Marion Catlin of The Shift Norwich
